Modular and Configurable Solutions for Vetronics Applications meet MIL-STD-461G

This blog discusses XP Power's modular and configurable solutions for compliance with MIL-STD-461 for Vetronics applications and how this relates to the Ground Army requirements within that standard.

The US Department of Defense Standard MIL-STD-461 is an EMI standard for the control of emissions and susceptibility characteristics of electronic equipment. The current revision of the standard MIL-STD-461G superseded MIL-STD-461F on 11th December 2015.

The emissions and susceptibility requirements are split into four sections each one designated with the relevant coding system: -

CE - Conducted Emissions

RE - Radiated Emissions

CS - Conducted Susceptibility

RS - Radiated Susceptibility

Within the table below is a breakdown of these requirements and how they apply to Ground Army: -

XP Power's COTS DC-DC converters comply with the susceptibility and emissions requirements within the standard when used in conjunction with our application specific range of filters. These are already deployed in operational duties globally.

Size and weight are at a premium in Land Army applications so our solutions are light and minimise board area combining EMI filtering and surge immunity within one compact unit. I have provided an example below: -

Each filter module combines common mode and differential mode stages to comply with the emissions requirements for MIL-STD-461G, like CE102 below: -

This solution also complies MIL-STD-1275, for spikes and surges, and the UK Ministry of Defence EMI standard DEF-STD-59-411 which are covered in previous blogs.

Where multiple outputs are required our MCC400-600 range provides a complete solution for up to 4 outputs in a standard EMC compliant compact, low profile package: -

This rugged, configurable product contains active and passive filtering and complies with EMC standards in one compact enclosure with the option to operate down to -55oC. Output voltages from 3.3V to 52.8V are user selectable. A block diagram of this product can be seen below: -

The MCC series provides options for signals, additional hold-up and auxiliary outputs that make it ideal for Vetronic applications and, when tested to CE102, the MCC series provides for margins of 10db. Such margins are particularly beneficial when multiple applications/power supplies are utilised within the same vehicle : -

The requirements for defense and military EMC standards can be challenging but by using XP Power's standard, approved building blocks either individually or within a configured solution, the design engineer can achieve the required performance with the lowest risk and fastest time to market.
